Wroclaw to Dresden - Very complicated journey

I checked out of the hotel & headed across the street to catch the tram to the train station.  Three stops later I was there.  Up until March, it was very simple to go from Wroclaw to Dresden, Germany.  You just bought a single ticket for the trip & hopped on a train arriving 3-4 hours later.  I think the Polish train company is having some financial issues, so now it is only possible to take a train to Zgorelec on the German border & then take a separate train from Gorlitz, Germany to Dresden.  To add further complications, there is construction on the German railway which requires taking multiple trains & a bus to reach Dresden.

Needless to say, I was a little worried I would get to Dresden without getting stuck somewhere.  Here is how my day went.

The train pulls up to the station in Wroclaw & everyone gets on board, then some Polish train guy is walking up & down the aisles shouting something in Polish. Everyone gets off the train & boards another train on the same platform.

The train stops at every little town on the way to German border.  After 1.5 hours, we finally reach a small town where we changed to another train to go to Zgorelec.  Lots of others are going the same way, we have to walk across the dirt about 75 yards to another track & go across the rail line to reach it.  I helped this lady in her 70s by carrying her bag & pulling her up to the platform from the tracks.  Then we board a small train for the 20 minute trip.  Not sure what I going to do when we reach the end of the line since the Polish station is about 2 miles from the German one.

We arrived in Zgorelec & I follow everyone else past the taxis & out of the parking lot.  I see an Asian woman from the train with a large suitcase standing along the street & ask if she waiting on a ride to Gorlitz.  She says a car (actually a minibus) will be there in a minute, the fare is only $1.10 to go to Gorlitz.  I leave my luggage at the train station in Gorlitz, so I could walk around town & take some photos.  There are 1-2 trains per hour to Dresden, so I have time to check out the town.  Gorlitz didn't get damaged during the war, so there are plenty interesting older buildings in town.  The Grand Budapest Hotel movie was filmed here.

I didn't have a map of town, so I just walked around & took photos of things that looked interesting.  I had a quick lunch & after a few hours headed back to the train station.  There was a train leaving in 20 minutes when I got back to the station & it took 2 hours to get to Dresden.  However, you took a 10 minute train ride, then a bus, & then 2 more trains to get there.  Luckily everyone was going the same way so it went fairly smoothly.  I reached Dresden at 5:00 pm & caught the tram to the Park Inn in Dresden for another free 2 night stay.  I had an upgraded room that had a very strange headboard.  It was padded & had a colored light around the edge with a control panel on the side to change the color - very weird.

I will spend tomorrow exploring the historic section of Dresden.

Here are a few more photos of Gorlitz.
