I was up early to check out of my Salzburg hotel. I made the 20 minute walk to the train station to store my luggage for the day and to catch the 8:15 am bus to the Eagle's Nest. There were mostly tourists on this bus & after a bus ride of just over an hour we arrived at the base of mountain where the Eagle's Nest is located.
The Eagle's Nest was built just prior to World War II as a 50th birthday present for Hitler. Here is a website with more information on this place.

After I purchased a ticket for the bus to the top of the mountain, I boarded the 9:45 am bus for the 20 minute ride to the top up a windy one lane road. The Eagle's Nest just opened 2 days ago for the season due to the amount of snow still on the mountain. There was still some snow visible on trails near the top, but it was warm & sunny. Perfect for taking in the scenic views.
After spending 2 hours on the mountain & taking lots of photos, it was time to head back to Salzburg. On the way down the mountain, I noticed a guy paragliding off the mountain.
I met a nice couple from Texas on the bus ride back to the Salzburg train station, they were on the way to Munich. I had to really move quickly to catch my train to Vienna, since the bus arrived at 2:44 & the train would leave at 2:52. I was able get my stuff out of storage & be on the train in 3 minutes, pretty good for an old guy!!! The train to Vienna was really great with leather seats & on two levels with only a few stops. The train ride was only 2 1/2 hours. The subway was pretty simple to navigate & about 20 minutes later I was making the 3 block walk to my apartment for the next 3 days.
Everyone ignored the trail closed sign.
