Salzburg

I was ready for a relaxing 4.5 hour train ride through Slovenia & Austria.  Unfortunately there was the same issue as yesterday, there was construction on the railway in Slovenia.  So all the passengers that were on the train coming to Ljubljana had to exit the train & get on two completely full buses in addition to the people like me just starting their trip.  We ended up riding on the bus for 1 hour 20 minutes before getting back on the train near the Austrian border.  We were running about 15 minutes late.

There was a long announcement in German after we got on, apparently there was a rail strike in Germany that week & the train would only be going as far as Salzburg.  It was originally supposed to continue on Munich.  The ride was pretty enjoyable after getting off the bus & being able to relax & watch the scenery.  The train station was very large & modern, apparently it he'd just been remodeled.

The hotel is on the right

I had a 20 minute walk to the hotel from the train station.  I was staying in a small hotel on a nice pedestrian only street only a few minutes from old town.  The room was pretty good especially considering the building was over 500 years old.  The weather called for it to be overcast & rainy most of the weekend.  After leaving my luggage in the room, I headed out to check out the town.

Salzburg is very nice, the old town has lots of interesting shops & old buildings.  After walking around for a bit, I found a local pub that served German food.  I had a nice dinner of pork schnitzel, potatoes, salad, & beer.  The next morning I went for a 5 mile run along the paths next to the river, great scenery on this run.  Still feeling the effects of my cold, but it is getting better.  Explored the town more including visiting the Mozart house/museum & walking up to the overlook of the city next to the art museum.  I didn't realize that besides being a musical genius that Mozart is famous for his chocolate & it is advertised in shops all over town.  It was overcast most of the day, but it didn't rain so I was able to see a lot of the town.

I wanted to visit a place near Salzburg called the Eagle's Nest on the recommendation from my friend Guy P..  It had just opened for the season on Saturday, unfortunately the weather needs to be nice to make it worth the trip.  I decided to visit on Monday morning since the weather was supposed to be perfect.

I am not sure the story behind this guy's outfit.

  1. Isn't Salzburg the place where the Sound of Music was supposed to be situated? My wife and daughters all love that movie. Keep up the great blog!
